What's the difference between passive and active flexibility?
Passive flexibility uses an external force to achieve flexibility (i.e., body weight, band/strap, a teacher, block, yoga ball, and the list goes on). Active flexibility is the ability to get your body into a position without an outside force. The more significant the gap between your passive and active flexibility, the higher the risk for injury. 🤯 And the better active flexibility you have, the easier it'll be to get into flexy moves in the air and on the ground 🤗
How do I improve my active flexibility, then? Strengthen and condition the antagonistic muscle, aka the opposite muscles of what you're stretching near your end range of movement. 💪 For example... Working on hip flexibility? Engage and squeeze, as well as strengthen your glutes. Working on back flexibility? Strengthen your core as well. Working on hamstring flexibility? Engage your quads.
